Kim Jong-Il of North Korea, Than Shew of Burma and Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe are all dictators. They rule not because they have the approval of their citizens but because they want to rule. Brian Cowen’s democratic credentials are becoming increasingly suspect in this regard. This is a worrying development because the Taoiseach should be committed to democracy by its definition and not just on his own terms.

Ballina school receives funding boost

St Mary’s Secondary School, Ballina is to commence construction shortly on three new mainstream classrooms, one resource room and a new toilet suite after being granted funding under the 2010 Additional Accommodation Scheme. News of the funding was confirmed by local Fianna Fáil TD and Minister of State Dara Calleary.

No progress for Ballyvary Garda Station

Fine Gael Leader, Enda Kenny, TD, has received information from the Justice Minister, Dermot Ahern, TD, that the construction of Ballyvary Garda Station will be progressed only on the basis of accommodation priorities of An Garda Síochána.  The Minister confirmed that alternative Garda accommodation has been provided in Ballyvary but made no solid commitment to ensuring the provision of a new permanent station.  This has been raised in the Dail on countless occasions in the past but little or no progress has taken place despite previous commitments over the years, said Deputy Kenny.
